Laptops have a significant problem when it comes to keeping cool. A laptop is an enclosed space with several components that expend heat and as you can imagine things tend to get a little hot. The question is how to keep it cool and stop it from overheating, how to give your computer a long life span.

I'm going to give you a few tips on how to keep your laptops temperature down. Firstly if your CPU/processor fan is easily accessible then you should clean it as dust is your number one enemy when it comes to laptops, using a duster or blowing on it should do the trick. secondly the laptop vents should be cleared of any dust, I recommend using a vacuum cleaner or if you have any compressed air. The vents are how heat escapes from your laptop and if blocked can cause major problems. I would also advise anyone with a laptop to re-apply the heat sink paste as the value, age and quality of the computer determines what sort of heat sink paste was used.

Next I will talk about what you can do externally. One of the most important tips I can give you is to make sure your laptop has good air circulation. This will ensure that there is a ready supply of new cool air that the laptop can suck in. This may seem silly to mention but a laptop actually fairs worse being placed on your lap. The reason for this is humans also expending heat and can lead to rises in temperature quite significantly, not to mention it could be bad for your health and is certainly an enemy of your posture..

I personally am a big believer in accessories especially laptop cooling stands. Laptop stands usually have fans which increase the air flow and what's even better, they aren't that expensive. A stand also keeps it off the ground meaning the heat isn't escaping onto the surface which inevitably heats up when a laptop is sitting on it. If you insist in using a laptop as a lap-top my last tip is simple and fairly low cost, using some sort of surface that's portable and sturdy which you can rest on your lap. I recommend using a rectangular piece of wood possibly an old breadboard or some dry board, well I did say it was simple! This will keep your laptop away from your lap and absorb heat better than say clothing or bed sheets. For overkill you can still place your laptop stand on it meaning it becomes more portable if a little bulky.

P.S.
For desktops I would recommend giving it good air circulation and a regular clean both inside and out using a vacuum cleaner externally and a duster internally as you have to be delicate with components.
