The other day I got a call from a client who needed his desktop upgrading and servicing which was great, he wanted me to install a new Operating System and improve whatever else needed improving to give the PC a longer life span. The HP was the Compaq 2400 DX, so quite old and had Windows XP Pro installed which wasn't all that surprising for the age.

I proceeded on, logging in and installing CPU-Z to find the SPECS which were fairly underwhelming. The system consisted of a Intel Pentium dual core, 4 GB DDR2 RAM, 250GB Hard drive and a Geforce 8000 series graphics card.. I identified what needed to be upgraded of which I decided that the processor and graphics card were the best choice, mainly because Windows 10 doesn't support the 8000 series card and requires more processing power. You may be asking why not the RAM, the simple explanation is 4GB RAM is enough as the client won't be using any intensive applications.

After I had decided on the upgrade part's I backed up all files so the client won't lose any data, then went on to install Windows 10 Home 64 Bit which was smooth sailing. Once I was sure and the client agreed I upgraded the processor to a Intel Core 2 Duo and the graphics card to a Geforce GT 520, moved all the clients files back, updated Windows, installed AVG and even installed Office 365 which had been requested.
I installed HWMonitor to monitor the temperature of the CPU as I fitted the same fan and everything checked out. On top of that the servicing went well which consisted of updating the drivers using Geforce Experience, updated Windows and installed AVG 2016 Free edition plus when the client collected they were happy with the results, just what we want. |
