A Sony Vaio laptop came in the other day and I've got to say it was in a sorry state. The laptop was a 2012 model and had good specs which meant that it wasn't the components that needed upgrading. Furthermore the laptop was fast when booting up and slow when in Windows and some applications wouldn't even open. At this point I presumed it was most likely a virus or some kind of malicious software affecting the processes. On top of all of that it had an overheating problem which meant it could only do intensive processes for about 2 hours.

First off I started with scanning for viruses and since I couldn't get an anitvirus to install in regular Windows, no doubt the doing of malicious software, I decided to restart and enter Safe mode with Networking. Safe mode is a Windows feature that you can select in the advance boot options and only uses the basic functions needed to run windows. Once I started I installed Panda Antivirus, then ran a full computer scan which resulted in the laptop overheating. Yet another problem to solve. I decided to open up the back and clean the inside not forgetting to discharge any electricity I may of had by touching something metal. I also cleaned the vents with a vacuum to ensure it got enough air flow. When I turned the laptop back on I found that Panda Antivirus had actually found thirteen potentially harmful files or software and had secured them. I then did a quick computer scan which only scans the main parts of Windows and found three others which were also secured. The computer was now running smoothly and all the applications worked perfectly.

Now all that was left to do was update any applications and update Windows. I also monitored the temperatures with HWMonitor to ensure the temps were stable. After I had finished all of that I cleaned the outside and made it look almost new.
